Frequently asked questions

What is next:mp?
A multiplayer platform for GTA V: a launcher for players, a server for Windows and Linux, and a scripting API in JavaScript, TypeScript and C# that is close to RAGE Multiplayer's mp.*.
Do I need to own GTA V?
Yes. next:mp runs on your own legal copy of GTA V (the original edition, GTA5.exe, build 1.0.3889.0) from Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam or Epic Games Store.
Does it work with GTA Online or my GTA Online character?
No. Servers are run by the community and have their own worlds and rules. While you play through next:mp, GTA Online is not available in that game session.
Is GTA V Enhanced supported?
Not in this release.
Rockstar updated the game and next:mp stopped working.
Each next:mp release supports one GTA V build, because the client works with that build's code. Keep the game as it is and update next:mp when a release supports the new build. The launcher tells you which side is out of date.
Is it free?
Yes. Individual servers may have their own rules about donations or memberships; those are between you and the server owner.
Is next:mp safe to install?
The launcher installs only releases signed by the project's keys and checks every file before the game starts. It runs inside your game, so as with any game modification, download it only from this site.
Does next:mp have anti-cheat?
Not in the sense of a kernel driver. Servers can require clients to prove that their next:mp files are the signed release and report changes to their own code, but a determined attacker controls their own PC. Gameplay rules belong to each server's scripts.
Can I run my own server?
Yes, on Windows or Linux. See Hosting a server. Servers are private unless you turn on announce.
Can I use my RAGE Multiplayer scripts?
Many concepts and names match, so porting is usually straightforward, but not every RAGE function exists and some behave differently. The API reference lists what is implemented.
Where are my settings and logs?
In %LOCALAPPDATA%\next:mp. The launcher can also create a diagnostics file for support.
